In 1964, Rocky Johnson began his career as a professional wrestler in Southern Ontario. He formally changed his name to Rocky Johnson at that time. The renowned High Chief Peter Maivia, who subsequently became his father-in-law, served as his trainer.

He engaged in competition all over the world prior to joining the National Wrestling Alliance. Later, in the 1970s, he rose to prominence within NWA. In a similar vein, he has won numerous regional NWA singles and tag team titles. He also competed in title fights as Terry Funk and World Championship Harley Race.

He was unable to dislodge either of them from the NWA World Championship, unfortunately. For a few years, he competed in fights with Jerry Lawler under the Memphis organization and captured Lawler’s title. In the Mid-Atlantic region, he also wrestled as Sweet Ebony Diamond while wearing a mask.

He was employed by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1983. He later teamed up with Tony Atlas as a tag team. They became known as The Soul Patrol and were the first black tag team as a result. The Soul Patrol, commonly known as the Wild Samoans, defeated Afa and Sika on November 15, 1983.

Thus, they achieved a first: they became the World Tag Team Championship’s first African-American winner. However, they were just a tag team for six months. He departed the WWE after he and Atlas lost the gold.
